Article 108: Making a Shaker Peg Coat Rack

This wall-mounted rack uses evenly spaced pegs on a backboard. It’s ideal for coats, hats, towels, or tools.
Materials
1" × 4" hardwood board (cherry, maple, poplar): length to fit space (e.g., 36")
Shaker pegs (5–7 depending on length)
Wood glue
Mounting screws and wall anchors
Tools Needed
Drill with Forstner bit (3/8" or 7/16")
Level and measuring tape
Sandpaper and finish
Steps
Layout Peg Holes
Evenly spaced along board, 2" from bottom edge.
Drill Holes
Use drill press or guide for straight holes.
Glue in Pegs
Apply glue to tenons and press firmly into holes.
Mount to Wall
Use countersunk screws, fill with wood plugs if desired.
Finish
Sand smooth, round edges slightly, apply finish of choice.
