Article 108: Making a Shaker Peg Coat Rack

This wall-mounted rack uses evenly spaced pegs on a backboard. It’s ideal for coats, hats, towels, or tools.

Materials

  • 1" × 4" hardwood board (cherry, maple, poplar): length to fit space (e.g., 36")

  • Shaker pegs (5–7 depending on length)

  • Wood glue

  • Mounting screws and wall anchors

Tools Needed

  • Drill with Forstner bit (3/8" or 7/16")

  • Level and measuring tape

  • Sandpaper and finish

Steps

  1. Layout Peg Holes

    • Evenly spaced along board, 2" from bottom edge.

  2. Drill Holes

    • Use drill press or guide for straight holes.

  3. Glue in Pegs

    • Apply glue to tenons and press firmly into holes.

  4. Mount to Wall

    • Use countersunk screws, fill with wood plugs if desired.

  5. Finish

    • Sand smooth, round edges slightly, apply finish of choice.
