Butcher block counters wear beautifully, but sometimes they need a full restoration. Here’s how to safely refinish one for food-grade use.
Materials
Butcher block countertop (maple, walnut, or acacia)
Food-safe mineral oil or cutting board finish
80, 120, 220 grit sandpaper
Tools Needed
Orbital sander
Plastic scraper or putty knife
Tack cloth
Rags
Vacuum
Steps
Scrape and Clean
Use a scraper to remove sticky residue or dried spills.
Sand the Surface
Start with 80 grit to level, move to 120 and 220 for smoothness.
Vacuum and Wipe
Remove all dust using a vacuum and tack cloth.
Apply Oil Finish
Flood surface with mineral oil. Let soak for 30 minutes, then wipe dry.
Repeat 3 times for full saturation.
Maintenance Tip
Reapply oil monthly to keep the wood healthy and stain-resistant.
