Butcher block counters wear beautifully, but sometimes they need a full restoration. Here’s how to safely refinish one for food-grade use.

Materials

  • Butcher block countertop (maple, walnut, or acacia)

  • Food-safe mineral oil or cutting board finish

  • 80, 120, 220 grit sandpaper

Tools Needed

  • Orbital sander

  • Plastic scraper or putty knife

  • Tack cloth

  • Rags

  • Vacuum

Steps

  1. Scrape and Clean

    • Use a scraper to remove sticky residue or dried spills.

  2. Sand the Surface

    • Start with 80 grit to level, move to 120 and 220 for smoothness.

  3. Vacuum and Wipe

    • Remove all dust using a vacuum and tack cloth.

  4. Apply Oil Finish

    • Flood surface with mineral oil. Let soak for 30 minutes, then wipe dry.

    • Repeat 3 times for full saturation.

  5. Maintenance Tip

    • Reapply oil monthly to keep the wood healthy and stain-resistant.
