Article 87: Restoring an Antique Wooden Level
By: A Woodworker Who Believes Spirit Levels Should Still Have Soul
Wooden spirit levels from the early 1900s are not only beautiful—they’re surprisingly accurate when restored. Here’s how to revive one.
Materials
Old wooden level (Stanley, Disston, etc.)
Brass polish
Mineral spirits
Shellac or boiled linseed oil
Tools Needed
Flathead screwdriver
Fine steel wool
Sandpaper (400–1000 grit)
Small brush
Rag and cotton swabs
Steps
Disassemble Vials
Carefully remove brass vial covers. Clean glass and check for intact bubble tubes.
Clean Wood
Wipe wood clean with mineral spirits. Lightly sand if heavily soiled.
Polish Brass
Remove oxidation with steel wool and polish. Be gentle to preserve patina if desired.
Check Accuracy
Lay level on flat surface, mark bubble position. Flip 180° and compare. Shim if off.
Refinish
Apply shellac or oil for a rich, vintage look. Buff gently when dry.
