The Shakers used peg rails in nearly every room—for hats, tools, brooms, and even chairs. This project replicates the original spirit while fitting modern homes.
Materials
Poplar or cherry board: 1" x 3" x 48"
Tapered wooden pegs (buy or turn your own) – spaced every 6–8"
Finish: milk paint or oil
Screws, anchors (for wall mounting)
Tools Needed
Drill press or handheld drill
Forstner bit (matched to peg size)
Level
Screwdriver
Optional: lathe (to turn pegs)
Steps
Lay Out Peg Holes
Space evenly. Use centerline and mark every 6" or 8". Drill holes with clean shoulder using Forstner bit.
Insert Pegs
Apply glue and tap pegs firmly in place. Let dry.
Sand and Paint
Sand smooth and apply traditional Shaker milk paint or oil finish.
Install on Wall
Use level to mount with screws into studs or with anchors.
