Shaker-Style Peg Rail System – Utility Meets Simplicity

Article 66: Shaker-Style Peg Rail System – Utility Meets Simplicity

By: A Woodworker Who Respects Functional Beauty

The Shakers used peg rails in nearly every room—for hats, tools, brooms, and even chairs. This project replicates the original spirit while fitting modern homes.

Materials

  • Poplar or cherry board: 1" x 3" x 48"

  • Tapered wooden pegs (buy or turn your own) – spaced every 6–8"

  • Finish: milk paint or oil

  • Screws, anchors (for wall mounting)

Tools Needed

  • Drill press or handheld drill

  • Forstner bit (matched to peg size)

  • Level

  • Screwdriver

  • Optional: lathe (to turn pegs)

Steps

  1. Lay Out Peg Holes

    • Space evenly. Use centerline and mark every 6" or 8". Drill holes with clean shoulder using Forstner bit.

  2. Insert Pegs

    • Apply glue and tap pegs firmly in place. Let dry.

  3. Sand and Paint

    • Sand smooth and apply traditional Shaker milk paint or oil finish.

  4. Install on Wall

    • Use level to mount with screws into studs or with anchors.
