This classic garden bench is made from rot-resistant cedar, features a contoured seat, and is built to last through all weather. Great for patios, porches, or garden paths.

Materials

  • 2×4 cedar boards – (6) @ 8'

  • 1×4 cedar boards – (4) @ 8'

  • Exterior wood screws – 2 1/2"

  • Waterproof wood glue

  • Outdoor finish: Spar urethane or penetrating oil

Cut List

  • Legs: (4) @ 17" (2×4)

  • Stretchers: (2) @ 36" (2×4)

  • Seat slats: (5) @ 48" (1×4)

  • Back supports: (2) @ 20" (2×4)

  • Armrests: (2) @ 20" (1×4)

Tools Needed

  • Miter saw

  • Drill/driver

  • Jigsaw (for seat curves)

  • Clamps

  • Orbital sander

Steps

  1. Cut All Parts to Length

    • Use stop blocks for consistency. Sand ends before assembly.

  2. Assemble Leg Frames

    • Join legs and stretchers with glue and screws. Make 2 frames.

  3. Add Seat Slats

    • Space evenly with a 1/4" gap. Screw into the stretchers.

  4. Install Back Support and Arms

    • Add vertical back supports and fasten armrests on top.

  5. Finish

    • Apply spar urethane for UV protection. Reapply yearly.
