Shaker design is clean and purposeful. This wall-mounted coat rack with evenly spaced pegs offers beauty and daily usefulness.

Materials

  • 1x6 hardwood board (cherry, maple, or poplar) – 36" long

  • (6) Shaker pegs (3/4" diameter tenon)

  • Wood glue

  • French cleat for mounting (optional)

Tools Needed

  • Drill press or handheld drill

  • Forstner bit (3/4")

  • Sandpaper

  • Ruler & marking gauge

  • Clamps

Measurements

  • Backboard: 36" x 5 1/2"

  • Peg spacing: 6" apart on center

  • Hole depth: 5/8"

Steps

  1. Prep the Board

    • Plane and sand the 1x6. Round edges with router or sandpaper.

  2. Layout Holes

    • Mark centerline and peg spacing (6 total).

  3. Drill Peg Holes

    • Use a drill press with stop block to ensure consistent depth.

  4. Glue Pegs

    • Apply glue to each peg’s tenon and insert into holes. Clamp if needed.

  5. Mount to Wall

    • Use keyhole hangers, screws through the board, or a French cleat system.

  6. Finish

    • Apply Danish oil or shellac for a natural finish.
