Article 21: Building a Wooden Birdhouse

A birdhouse is a satisfying project with immediate rewards—watching new tenants move in!

Materials

  • 1x6 pine board – 1 board, 6 ft long

  • Wood screws (1”) – 12 screws

  • Wood glue – As needed

  • Exterior paint/stain – Optional

Tools Needed

  • Saw (handsaw or circular saw)

  • Drill and bits (1.25” spade bit)

  • Sandpaper

  • Ruler and pencil

Steps

  1. Cut All Pieces
    Cut the front, back, sides, floor, and roof.

  2. Drill Entrance Hole
    Use a 1.25” bit to drill a hole in the front, 6” from the bottom.

  3. Assemble the Body
    Glue and screw sides, front, and back together.

  4. Attach Floor and Roof
    Secure the base and angled roof panels.

  5. Paint or Stain
    Use an exterior-safe finish and mount the birdhouse at least 6 ft off the ground.
