Article 111: Crafting a Round Edge-Grain Cutting Board

Round cutting boards offer a timeless design for serving and prep. This edge-grain version is easier to make than end grain, and still beautiful.

Materials

  • Maple or walnut strips: (8) @ 18" Γ— 1.5" Γ— 1"

  • Titebond III (food-safe)

  • Mineral oil and beeswax finish

Tools Needed

  • Jointer and planer (optional)

  • Bandsaw or jigsaw

  • Belt sander or random orbital sander

  • Router with roundover bit

Steps

  1. Mill Strips

    • Plane smooth and square. Edge glue with clamps.

  2. Trace Circle

    • Use trammel or large bowl as guide (14" diameter).

  3. Cut and Shape

    • Cut circle with bandsaw. Smooth with sander.

  4. Round Edges

    • Use 1/4" roundover bit.

  5. Finish

    • Sand to 220 grit, apply mineral oil/beeswax.
