Old toolboxes often have great character—and issues. Here's how to bring one back to life without ruining the patina.

Common Problems

  • Loose joints

  • Cracked bottom

  • Stuck hinges

  • Missing handles

Materials Needed

  • Wood glue

  • Replacement brass screws/hinges

  • Boiled linseed oil or paste wax

  • Shellac (optional)

Tools Needed

  • Clamps

  • Mallet

  • Scraper

  • Sandpaper (120, 220)

  • Small hand saw

Steps

  1. Disassemble Gently

    • Remove hardware. Label each piece.

  2. Clean All Parts

    • Use mild soap and water, then dry immediately.

  3. Repair Joints

    • Re-glue dovetails or miters. Clamp overnight.

  4. Replace Damaged Wood

    • Patch with matching species or wood filler if minor.

  5. Finish

    • Apply oil or wax to revive the grain and protect surface.
