This guide covers stripping, repairing, and refinishing a classic sideboard or credenza with veneer and hardwood elements.
Materials
Citristrip or similar finish remover
Sandpaper (150 to 320 grit)
Wood glue
Veneer patch kit (if needed)
Danish oil or lacquer
Masking tape, rags, and gloves
Tools
Scraper
Orbital sander
Putty knife
Clamps
Detail sanding block
Soft brush for dust
Steps
Assess and Disassemble
Remove drawers, hardware, and legs. Take photos of any complicated joinery.Strip Old Finish
Apply finish remover, scrape gently with plastic scraper. Clean residue with mineral spirits.Veneer Repair
Patch or re-glue lifting veneer. Clamp gently with wax paper barriers.Sanding
Sand veneer gently with 220 and 320 grit. Solid wood can be sanded with lower grits if needed.Finish
Apply Danish oil for a soft sheen, or lacquer for a glossy vintage finish.
